The Phish Effect - How being there is the key and meta data helps

The above screen capture is from my <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/jsloss"> flickr account</a>. The huge spike in traffic came from the most random of places, a Phish (the band) message board.

It just goes to show that you can never really tell where a big spike in attention is going to come from. It never would have happened if I didn't upload my photos and tag them with relevant meta data. The key, make content easy to share.

How?

  1. Posting your photos is key, leaving them on your memory card because you think no one will like them is not.  (marking them as Creative Commons can help too)
  2. Make them discoverable by adding tags (aka meta data). In this example it was The Gorge, Camping, tags that made the difference. Phish is playing at the gorge, and people wanted to know what camping there was like. My photos did the trick.

So what?

At the very least you'll end up with a bit more attention, and a few more fans. Then again you could be like @kk, who's photo ended up on the flickr home page "

Taking A Stock Of Real Time Search Hype. These are all nice, but I think Twitter and Bit.ly are the ones to watch.

Google does a great job at telling us whats relevant to our queries online, but it leaves a lot out.

Real time search engines are pulling useful data from our social graph, offering immediate and often more relevant results than Google.

While some of the companies noted in the Trendspotting post (click through to read it) are going to be game changers, the one to watch, IMHO is Twitter.

Twitter and Bit.ly are working on something that will make this "real time thing" a lot more relevant to a lot more people.

I dont know what it is yet, but as GaryVee says - Twitter is Bringing the Thunder, with Search

Lets see what happens.

Twitter Brings the Thunder with…Search Twitter... via @garyvee

For those of you who question Twitter's ability to make money, you're so wrong.

I Couldnt agree more with Gary. Real Time is a very relevant, and potentially profitable niche in search. Lots of other companies are exploring the space, but Twitter has the upper hand, they have the users.

Keep an eye on this space as twitter moves to be "the pulse of the web"

Great New Realtime Search Engine. Collecta Turns Internet’s Ocean of Data into a River of Real Time Information via @briansolis

With conversations and connections happening all over the web, keeping tabs on brand mentions or specific topics can be a challenge. Actually, in my case, it usually involves a host of "tabs" open in my firefox.

But tools like Collecta.com , topsy.com and oneriot.com are changing that.

Pretty cool stuff .
